Effects of a preschool mathematics curriculum: Summative research on the Building Blocks project
K-12 - Quantitative Research; Douglas H. Clements University of Buffalo and Julie Sarama, State University of New York
This experimental study evaluated the efficacy of Building Blocks, a NSF-funded preK to grade 2 mathematics curriculum based on a comprehensive model of developing research-based software and print curricula. Building Blocks for Math embeds mathematical learning in children’s daily activities, ranging from designated math activities to circle and story time. The experimental treatment group score increased significantly more than the comparison group score. Findings suggest that focused early mathematical interventions help young children develop a foundation of informal mathematics knowledge. Also see the U.S. Department of Education’s What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) intervention report for further information and research on Building Blocks for Math.
