The Gang of Four: Why Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook Dominate the Market

Based on an interview with Eric Schmidt at D9, Kara Swisher will discuss how Google, Apple, Amazon and Facebook dominate consumer technology today through their platform strategies.

For example:

  • Google offers Gmail, Google Docs, Google+ and, of course, Search; all connected by your Google ID.
  • Apple changed music with the iPod and iTunes, shaped the mobile landscape with the iPhone and owns the tablet market with the iPad, all connected via iCloud.
  • Amazon is a massive retailer of books, music and electronics and is expanding its presence in the tablet/eReader space, with a big push to host it all via AWS.
  • Facebook connects you with your friends and on various platforms and devices with its huge and powerful social networking.

Kara will further discuss the competitive landscape across these frenemies. Fierce competition between Apple & Google on mobile -- alongside their partnerships with Google Search and Maps. How Google is starting to sell a wide range of entertainment options, which spells competition to Amazon and Apple -- while Amazon's Kindle Fire is trying to take some of Apple's share of the tablet market. Facebook has been able to ward off competition in its arena so far, but Google+ is edging in. And one of the biggest question that remains is: Where is Microsoft in all of this?

Keynote:

Kara Swisher, Co-Producer, D: All Things Digital, Co-Executive Editor, AllThingsD.com, The Wall Street Journal

9:45 AM - 10:30 AM

Facebook and Google+: Is the reach worth the risk?

Spotify’s success on Facebook coupled with the release of OG-based apps by the Guardian, the Washington Post, and others seem to point to Facebook and/or Google+ as a potential platform, not only for delivering content but also monetizing it while driving audience reach. Social graphs are hot, but they also pose some unique challenges to publishers. This panel will help you understand social graphs, how they can help publishers extend their content distribution reach, and what the potential pitfalls are and how to avoid them. Join us for an educational and informative session that will help you answer the question: “are social graphs right for my business?”

Syndicating Your Content and Working with B2B Aggregation Platforms

In a world of multi-platforms, how do you deliver your content? Do you syndicate it through an aggregator, build branded apps for each platform, or put it behind a pay wall or make it freely available?

This panel discussion focuses on whether or not to syndicate your content, and if so, what your syndication strategy should be. Is it a one–size fits all approach where text and video are treated the same? Or should there be separate approaches for different kinds of content?

  • If I do it myself, can I create scale through my efforts or is it too costly?
  • What about the growing area of curation?
  • If I choose that, how can I be sure my content will be in the mix?
  • If I go with an aggregator, will I be cannibalizing my core business?

There are a lot of questions and a lot of uncertainty in this changing landscape. In this panel, we will hear from content creators who have done it alone and built their own branded apps and those who have worked with syndicators, aggregators and curators to get their content to a larger audience. We will also hear from the aggregators and gain insight from their perspective.

Making Informed Decisions in a Multi-platform World

Publishing in a multi-platform environment can be exponentially more difficult than publishing for just web or web plus mobile. Each new platform you add to the mix adds more complexity. And the system you implemented P-iP (pre-iPad) never anticipated the cool new functionality your users are demanding. Presenters will discuss how they are currently publishing for multiple platforms and explore key strategies to scale publishing operations without driving headcounts higher nor sacrificing quality.

Going Native: When and Why Should You Use Native Apps vs HTML5?

Building a native app or using HTML5 is one of the fundamental decisions you’ll need to make about each of your mobile initiatives.  And despite the religious fervor that some bring to the discussion, the decision - going native, going pure HTML5 or taking a hybrid approach - should be based on a set of clearly definable criteria. In this discussion, we’ll look at the decisions made by a handful of publishers and provide attendees with a clear roadmap of the key elements which should drive their app decisions.

Dan Bennett, VP of Technology, Thomson Reuters

Scholarly Publishing Platforms: The Only Constant is Change

When scholarly publishing platforms first came into being, they offered scholarly publishers an online presence, and not much more than that.  But times have changed, customers have evolved, and buying criteria are evolving.  Now, Scholarly publishing platforms must expand their focus beyond the classic content of the print journal to include multi-media, data, metadata and semantics, analytics, applications, dynamically generated collections, and more. User experience matters. Data matters. Agility matters.  Times have changed and so have they.  This session will focus on what scholarly publishers need in a hosted publishing platform and how these platforms are meeting those needs.  Key topics will include knowing the individual user, building a compelling user experience, making content portable, and content monetization.

Beyond The Page: The Sentient World and a New Layer Of Content

As people young and old around the globe are carrying more and more complex devices with them, we are rapidly moving from dumb, reactive devices and largely static content, to a world where data, intelligence and computing power are distributed, ubiquitous, and networked, and content comes alive. In this new world, the conversation's participants and medium are different and may not even involve human interaction.  How do providers of content participate in this new discussion? How does sentience among mobile devices and an increasingly connected environment change our definition of what content is? This session will provide insight into what the next generation of content looks like as we move further from its definition being rooted in the printed page, as its use takes on new forms and its creators emerge from both the brand and from among customers.

The session will answer the following questions:

  • What's happening today that can provide an example of how interaction, consumption and creation of content will look in the future?
  • Once the conversation begins, how can companies, users and the devices and technology we use day-to-day participate?
  • What content should you offer as a corporation, so your ecosystem of employees, customers, partners and beyond can leverage it?

Keynote:

Chris Silva, Mobile Industry Analyst, Altimeter Group
