Translating ePublishing to Profitability
The evolving synergy between software and content providers is creating a foundation that is redefining the ePublishing industry. From paperback to desktop to wireless, content providers are building business models with their customers in mind, facing the challenge of giving them secure "anytime, anywhere" access to desired content. From a social perspective, potential customers must be included in the shaping of distribution and revenue models to develop products and services that are viable in the mass market. A legal framework must be established, and enforced, to balance concerns of piracy and privacy ensuring a fair return to creators and access without unnecessary intrusion. And on the technical side, stakeholders must strive for standards and solutions that support security and customer choice.
Individual companies can translate their models to meet these opportunities, but they cannot realize success without widespread adoption in the marketplace. These sessions explored the latest in online distribution trends and business models, electronic publishing standards and digital rights management.

Software is Everywhere
Over the past two decades, software as a "product" has been continuously reinvented, from mainframe to static PC-based programs to networked services and mobile applications. Today, more than ever before, software is the critical component driving innovation and transforming computing as the industry evolves towards network-based software and services.
In the near term, several new influences will impact how the software industry develops and markets its products. Software as a Service continues to shape traditional business models. Web services and application integration, the interoperable component shape of things to come, is becoming critically important. The growth of wireless and mobile devices demands new application form factor development models and fresh perspectives on access and security.
The future of the software industry is bright, but success will require key insight on what lies ahead. This track explored the effect of these trends on the industry and provided companies with information and strategic direction on choosing the right new technologies and market opportunities.
