Math Plus Program - K12 Inc.

Math+ is a unique program for grades K to 5 offering instruction through a variety of multisensory experiences that develop and strengthen fundamental concepts and skills. Based on the latest research in learning and mathematics, Math+ focuses on three key areas: computational fluency, conceptual understanding, and problem solving. Carefully sequenced lessons include an exciting menu of engaging activities organized into systematic routines that build student achievement and confidence.

Lesson structure moves learners strategically through a series of direct experiences intended to guide exposure, exploration, practice, reinforcement, and review of math concepts and skills. Audio enhanced activities, stimulating media, and interactive games and assets are all part of these experiences. The user friendly design of activities and lessons gives the learner a sense of control, while ensuring that learning experiences are appropriately challenging.

Ongoing assessment is carefully integrated into every math lesson, and the tools that measure student knowledge and skills in Math+ include tasks that span the cognitive domains (e.g., Bloom taxonomy).

The Math+ program incorporates intelligent adaptive paths for struggling students. At the end of certain challenging lessons, students complete a nongraded diagnostic assessment to determine whether or not they have mastered the content. If they have not achieved 80% mastery, students are directed by the learning management system to complete an additional activity that presents the concept in a different way and at a slower pace. Only after students demonstrate an appropriate level of understanding are they allowed to progress to the graded assessments. These assessment tools function with the adaptive mechanism to ensure that instruction is tailored to individual strengths and weaknesses.

Guidelines for the Learning Coach and Math+ instructor include content background and overview of common errors and misconceptions for target content, plus practical suggestions for successful lesson preparation. Lesson objectives and prerequisite skills continuously alert the Learning Coach to specific concepts and skills that are covered. In addition, if students move through more than one grade level of this program, the spiraling nature of the mathematics content allows them to consistently build on their existing knowledge base.

  • Calculus: Early Transcendentals (e-Book) - Pearson

Calculus is the mathematics of change. Change involves movement. One of the major challenges in producing a calculus textbook has been how to enable students to “visualize change” on a two-dimensional printed page. Attempts have been made to tackle the challenge using technology, but these attempts typically resulted in products with a steep learning curve or disconnected from the textbook that students actually used in the course. The new Briggs/Cochran Calculus eBook is changing that.

This new-generation eBook combines narrative material, examples and exercises, together with 650 interactive figures in an engaging, dynamic and rigorous eBook designed for both students (learning) and faculty (teaching). The creator of the eBook is Eric Schulz, a mathematics professor at Walla Walla Community College and a Wolfram Mathematica developer. Pearson partnered with Wolfram Research, the creators of Mathematica, to help Schulz bring to life his vision of what an eBook could be. The eBook runs in the freely available Mathematica Player software.

In the Briggs/Cochran Calculus eBook, the words, examples and Interactive Figures appear together, reinforcing one another. All of the controls on the Interactive Figures are buttons or sliders, eliminating the learning curve for their use and allowing students and instructors to get directly into the mathematics. Feedback from instructors and students has been overwhelmingly positive. Instructors have been able to integrate the Interactive Figures into lectures easily, where previously they may have rendered a figure by hand. They are able to “get to the concept” more directly than before and show students aspects of calculus that they had not previously been able to. A regular comment we hear from instructors runs like this: “This is the calculus course that exists in my head, but that I’ve struggled to pass along to my students.”

Briggs/Cochran Calculus has proven to be a compelling force in the marketplace, representing the most successful launch of a first-edition calculus text in two decades. Adopters range from two-year colleges to major four-year research universities. The eBook is housed in the MyMathLab course for Briggs/Cochran Calculus, along with 6,700 assignable, algorithmically generated exercises and other teaching and learning resources. MyMathLab is Pearson’s flagship product for delivering online courses that accompany Pearson’s textbooks in mathematics and statistics. Since 2001, MyMathLab has helped over 9 million students succeed at more than 1,900 colleges and universities.

    MyMathTest - Pearson

MyMathTest is a testing tool that assesses students’ strengths and knowledge gaps. It can be used as a supplement to a placement test, as preparation for any standardized test, or as a remediation tool. With MyMathTest, instructors can create unique online tests and quizzes, and allow students to practice as well as test themselves.

Using MyMathTest as an Educator: Educators can use MyMathTest features to assess students’ skills against course prerequisites. Using the online test questions, they can create tests that assess students’ skills from basic arithmetic through calculus. They can provide students with an opportunity to test and practice, or simply test to determine placement. Teachers also can use MyMathTest to create short refresher courses to help students come up to speed with their math skills as they prepare for additional courses or standardized tests, or return to school after some time off. Instructors are able to see all of the results from each student’s tests, and to track their time on task and their understanding.

Using MyMathTest as a Student: Students can use MyMathTest to take tests, practice for placement tests or standardized tests, or as a refresher course to improve their math skills. MyMathTest helps them build their skills by taking practice tests and working in personalized Study Plans, which show what they need to work on.

Based on each student’s initial test results, MyMathTest generates a personalized Study Plan that shows at a glance which topics each student needs to practice. The Study Plan links directly to interactive, tutorial questions that the students can use for practice. Practice questions include multimedia resources, such as videos and animations, that help students develop understanding and correctly answer the questions. For example, one could watch a video of an instructor giving a portion of a lecture or look at an animation that demonstrates a concept. These multimedia learning aids help students become confident with the concepts required to answer the questions, and provide extra help when it is needed.
