Seminars on Science: The Solar System

The American Museum of Natural History developed Seminars on Science, its online teacher professional development program, in order to connect teachers across the United States to cutting-edge research and powerful classroom resources. Each course is co-taught by an experienced educator and a scientist working in the field, and features rich media and opportunities for vibrant discussion. The eleven courses include Earth: Inside and Out; The Ocean System; and Evolution.

Our latest course, The Solar System, is co-authored by Neil deGrasse Tyson, one of the country’s most prominent scientists. This course explores the current understanding of our Solar System informed by missions to the Sun, planets, moons and asteroids – with stunning imagery of these worlds and new ideas about their origin, evolution and fate.

Independent evaluation confirms that Seminars on Science deepens scientific understanding and provides educators with valuable classroom resources. Graduate credit is available through the program’s higher education partnerships. As a result, Seminars on Science is helping to address a critical national need in science professional development by leveraging the resources of one of the world’s preeminent scientific, cultural and educational institutions.
